EMG/NCS Testing

Edge Diagnostics brings expert electrodiagnostic testing—Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG)—directly to your clinic or patients.

On-site electrodiagnostic testing with fast, accurate reports delivered in 48 hours.

Electromyogram (EMG) / Nerve Conduction Study(NCS)

EMG/NCS testing consists of two distinct tests that evaluate nerve and muscle health.

The first test, a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) evaluates the nerve health. Mild electrical stimulation is administered to the skin directly over the affected nerve. The nerve response is then measured by electrodes applied to the skin surface, which produces a visual signal that can provide information about the condition of the nerve.

During an Electromyogram (EMG), a small pin is inserted in the muscle to evaluate its condition by measuring electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and during contraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Physical Therapists Perform the Test?

Physical therapists who provide electrodiagnostic testing services are required to complete a rigorous didactic curriculum, 500 clinical studies and 2000 hours of testing in order to qualify to sit for an examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).

Currently, among all physical therapists in the United States, there are less than 200 who are board certified to provide electrodiagnostic testing services.

How To Prepare For The Test?

1. Clean Skin: No lotions or creams, oils, perfumes, or Vaseline anywhere on the body the day of the test.

4. Medications – Please bring a list of your current medications

5. All other medications may be taken as prescribed.

6. EMG/NCS will not affect pacemakers and defibrillators.
