Physical therapists who provide electrodiagnostic testing services are required to complete a rigorous didactic curriculum, 500 clinical studies and 2000 hours of testing in order to qualify to sit for an examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
Currently, among all physical therapists in the United States, there are less than 200 who are board certified to provide electrodiagnostic testing services.
1. Clean Skin: No lotions or creams, oils, perfumes, or Vaseline anywhere on the body the day of the test.
2. Wear loose clothing: Providers need easy access to arms, legs, neck and back.
3. Be sure skin is cleaned thoroughly prior to the test.
4. Medications – Please bring a list of your current medications
5. All other medications may be taken as prescribed.
6. EMG/NCS will not affect pacemakers and defibrillators.
7. EMG/NCS does NOT require fasting. A normal meal schedule may be followed on the day of the test.
